Estonia was playing against Canada on Wednesday. And Estonia won 2-0! Sweet!
It's especially sweet as Estonia is ranked number 129 in the world by FIFA, and Canada is number 62. Even though, having seen Canadian soccer team playing, I really can't understand how can they have such a high position.
But it also wasn't an ordinary game. The game happened in a thick, thick snow. And I think that could be my fault. To be more exact: my Mom has been complaining that they've got no snow in Estonia this winter. And we have had way more than enough. So she asked for some snow. And me, being a nice daughter, said "sure". And so I sent a little package. I talked to my Mom today, and she said she will never ask me for snow again. Apparently it was too much. It's not easy to understand Moms...
But here is a short video about the game on Wednesday (I'm not too jealous):
And here is the news piece:

rebel
Rebel, that's my middle name. At least recently. I just have to oppose myself to anything that seems ridiculous to me. One colorful example:
We had a dinner with our lab. The organizer mentioned in his e-mail, that everyone should bring something, and since one of us is vegetarian, we should keep that in mind. It was not said explicitly that the food needs to be vegetarian, but it was quite clear from the e-mail, that this is what it implied. I felt it was unfair. If there are 8 people, and one of them is vegetarian, then it doesn't mean that there can't be any meat in the house. I think it means, that there should be an option for the vegetarian to eat, but there should be something for the meat-eaters too. So - I decided to bring shrimp! And it was popular. Especially since everything else was vegetarian.
But I think the vegetarian gods decided to pay me back for my rebellious shrimp, as after dinner (chocolate chili) I got sick. VERY sick. And it took me until Monday to recover. I suspect the vegetarian gods, since everybody else was fine.
PS! Kullionu - do you remember the "Rebel Yell" by Scooter, that we used to see on VIVA (I think..) so often? This song seems to fit here so well.

the crisis is over
I have been quiet recently. In the blog world that is. It has been due a small crisis. A short recap goes as follows: I had another money issue. My supervisor didn't sign my salary papers. And the days went by, and still no sign of signing. We talked about it, and it was usually so, that I need to finish my manuscript and submit it, and then. I did submit. And nothing else happened. And then the manuscript came back (rejected), I fixed it, resubmitted, and again - nothing on the money front.
It was SO stressful. As I had to pay 5 grand for my tuition in January, I didn't have much money left. I do TA, but this money is for my rent.
Anyway. As I got stressed, I got all my life confused. So I went to see my shrink very often, which was good (sometimes I feel like a north-american from the movies - they all have shrinks and etc. In the real life, among the people I know, I think I'm the only one who actually sees the shrink regularly). The scary point was when my shrink said "I don't know what to do with you. I'm contemplating, that should I send you to the emergency..." My goodness, I got the shrink worried. That made me feel pretty horrible (I almost decided not to go and see her again. But I did realize that its her job). The reason for her being so worried, was the fact, that I had decided not to eat anymore, and I had some consequences from that.
But - it's all over now!
Thanks to my shrink I got my money issue solved (through her and through my wonderful friends my issue made it to the higher instances, and then finally started to move. It made me feel pretty bad, that I had to involve so many people to my problem, but I guess there was no other option). And when I got rid of this big money-worry, I also started to eat again. My selection has some improvements to be made, but still - it's the start.
The life seems good again!
And it will be even better, when I will actually get my money (in April).
The underline is, that PhD definitely damages your health. I think there should be a clause about this on the acceptance form.

Winterfun: snowshoeing

I'm not sure whether I have mentioned it already, but after these snowstorms my excitement for snow and snowlove came back. So quickly I organized a trip to the forest on snowshoes. Snowshoes are these big flip-flop like things that strap tp your shoes, and won't let you fall through the snow. And this year - cumulative snow amount is close to 4 meters.
It was SO much FUN! The day was just perfect - not too cold, not too warm. It was so sunny. The snow was so pretty. And we had a great turnout - 18 people came. We walked around Lac Philippe in the Gatineau park.

The funny thing was to learn, how people do not have a common sense and how do they ignore the e-mails. I sent out that it's about 3 hours snowshoeing track. - Yet some people were surprised to see, that it's REAL snowshoeing. I sent out an e-mail with instructions how to dress (for people who wouldn't know better). Major point being: good shoes and socks, layers in clothing, and water. Yet people came in jeans and their everyday wintercoats and without water. Of course they were boiling in an hour (one of them was our VP-Sports - kind of ironic).
So 18 went until the first expected fire and rest place (we confirmed before that it does exist). But - what wasn't there was the resting area. Then our group split - half went back (people who didn't expect "serious" sport and people who were boiling and kaput). The other half continued to search for the fireplace, as we had hotdogs and marshmellows with us. And we found a spot FIVE minutes after we parted with the other half. of course - it was not kept ready. but - we are all resourceful. We took down some trees (the dead ones), we had some paper (incident report and note papers), and voila - we had fire. It was so nice!

Different techniques in hotdog cooking. I am still convinced that MY way (the crossed way) is better.

Mishap with the first hotdog...
bear balls are the best
Don't you agree?
Ok, maybe some background would help.
Last Sunday I went to the Wild Game dinner (to clarify: first I thought it's some sort of "wild" night full of different kind of games. But - I was wrong. Wild game is just wild meat). It was wonderful! So much meat. Lot's of bear (three bears. some "naked", some marinated). Lots of wild geese and some other birds. Deer. Elk. Venison (hirv). Porcupine (okassiga). And some more that I can't remember. It was pretty amazing!

But my goodness - the stomach fills up quite quickly when you eat meat. But the bear balls are the best in my opinion. It was backed up by kids (who are known to be picky) last year, who only ate bear balls. And Canella (my friends dog) ate too much last year, and in the end ONLY bear balls were accepted.
Our way back was a bit crazy, as last Saturday about 50 cm snow came down. And that's a lot. Roads were already full of snow (from the previous snowstorm on Wednesday with 40 cm snow).
Right before I took the picture of Julia and Jaan, I completely wiped out into the fresh snow.
But we made it!

party story
First I needed to celebrate my 5 years in Canada.
Second - I really needed to get drunk.
So - I had a party. On Saturday.
I called it a "slumber party" on Facebook. Because I was thinking of lumbr and lumberjacks and logs and bonfires, and I thought it's a romantic theme. Then I got questions, that why are boys invited, and what kind of slumber party it is then. And then i found out that slumber party means a sleepover party. Hmmm...
I also warned people that my apartment is plus 30 degrees (just like my tropical island Estonia), and I changed the theme into red and white bikini party.
And igamine that - everbody showed up in sweaters. There was no bikinis nor even just t-shirts. Also - no-one wore red. And tehre wee 15 or so people. What are the odds. Finally Radek came in red and white - and that was cos he is polish:)
It was a fun night. We had drinks. We tried Vana Tallinn and Kristallkymmel. We had rum from Dominican Republic. We played Mafia. We discussed many topics. It was really fun!
The last person to leave was Sujeeve - at 3 am or so.
And Andrea stayed over - to make it a real slumber party:)
But - something else happened. I fell. And not "just", but I fell out of my bed. And to remind you - my bed is high - it's about 1 m from the ground. And when I went to pick up the sheets for Andrea, I slipped and fell down. And to make it more complete - on my way I hit my shelve, andafter my landing ALL my shelves and clothes fell on top of me. It was pretty funny!
Of course then next day it was time to count the bruises:)
In general - I didn't feel to well on Sunday. I had a head ache. A big one. So I watched a movie - Bella (2007). It was sweet. And then at 2 i dragged myself out to enjoy sunshine. It was a GORGEOUS day - sun, and not too cold, and lots of snow... I went to feed ducks. But "pagana pardid" (damn ducks) were on the other side of the river. So I did not feed the ducks.
And in the evening we had Baltic FIlm festival and Estonian movie Autumn Ball (Sygisball) was playing. It was interesting... Definitely good job in filming and acting. And the storylines were ironically funny. It was also depressive, but not in a too invasivve manner. Overall I think it was pretty good. But - I'm biased. I can't say that I would have liked it as much, if it were to Latvian.
And the week so far - nothing new really... on Wednesday we had a big snowstorm. It was cool! Lot's white fluff snow. Again. I like it:) But people in general are geting tired. Th traffic is crazy always. The city is running out of salt. It takes a long time to get anywhere.
But I still like it. I don't drive. I don't need to get anywhere on time (except Thursday and Friday morning). And fluffy snow is pretty.
